If you are familiar
with the Schoonover genealogy, you know about the so-called "bastard
line" that begins with Niclaes Van Schoonhoven, born about 1684/85. He
was the child of Debora Christoffels David and he father was not
Hendrick Claessen Van Schoonhoven. This is a documented fact as shown
in the divorce proceedings between Hendrick and Debora in the Kingston,
NY court records. Debora readily admitted her affair but choose to give
her bastard son the name Van Schoonhoven anyway. Thus, there exists an
entire line of Schoonovers that are not blood relatives of the original
Schoonovers.
Not that most of us
care. Some of the non-blood line cousins have contributed as much or
more to this country as some the pure blood line. Norman B. Schoonover
traces his line from the above mentioned Niclaes. Norman B was born in
1873 (unverified) and died in 1949 (unverified). No places mentioned in

Edwin Samuel Williams
was married once (1912)to Rosalba Cerussi in New York City. He died age
61; she lived to 92. The family of Charles Cornelius Williams and
Elizabeth Close had two sons: Edwin S and Arthur. The original settler
in the tri-county area was Samuel Williams and his wife Louisa Densmore,
parents of Charles C, Arthur and Mary. I found them in the 1850 census
in Burlington, Bradford County. Later Samuel was a widower with them in
Athens in 1880. I can not find his buriel place anywhere. My husband
always said maybe it was in the backyard. There is a story connected to
Charles, the Civil War veteran which I will send later tonight in a
separate email--a scandalous tale. I may write a story about him if it

School (in Charleston Township, Tioga Co., PA)on Joyce Tice site of
School Souvenirs, has Cora Bliss Claus as the daughter of Dwight Bliss
and her brother was Clarence born in 1886. These were Esther Mays
Harer's grandfather's sister and brother. Esther says she is a grand
niece of Cora & Charles 570-659-5364.
This is what
Esther wrote on 9/10/2000:
First I must apologize
for not responding to you. We have moved my
92 yr. old mother in
law in with us and we have been in an uproar. But
things are settling so
I just checked my mail.
First of all I do not
have much on the Claus family per sa except a
little on Benjamin &
Martha who are indeed -parents of Charles B. who
married by great-aunt
Cora Bliss. I have other pictures of Cora and
some of the family
unidentified. I remember her although I was pretty
young. She lived at
Round Top.
I have an Aunt and
Uncle in their 80's who could perhaps help you. The
photo was in my
mother's pictures and the two people mentioned were
identified, Cora Bliss
Claus & her brother Charles. The Cora mom was
certain of but she had
the boy marked as Dwight however I would think
this was Charles based
on other pictures of the family and the ages. The
Charles would have
been a Bliss however they all lived in the same
area. Also there is a
Zeke Rogers who is still pretty sharp that
remembers a bit about
the Culver school. Although the individuals in
the photo are
considerably younger..

collected much
information on the Bliss family and others in the area
for a long time and

to Sally from Charles Briggs. Roass died of a heart attack at home. He
graduated from Wellsboro High School in 1926, received a bachelors
degree in architectural engineering from Penn. State Univ. in 1931 He
joined the Army Corps of Engineers and during World War II he worked on
construction of the Richmond Air Base where he met and married Janet in
1942. He was an active memeber of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Fairfax, VA for 35 years.

for Jay Paddock near Rushville, NY when Bud was born. Dick says that
we moved to Lawrenceville, PA in March of 1945 where Harlow managed the
chicken farm owned by Sherm Butler. He left PA in March of 1948 and
worked for Larry Draper at Billsboro near Geneva, NY. Sam Kelsey also
worked for Draper at that time. He left Drapers in October of 1950.
Harlow left farming and drove a bakery truck for a few years. We moved
to a big house in the country near Waterloo for a few months before
going to Seneca Castle, and then eventually bought the house at 25 Grant
Avenue in Geneva, NY. He and Peg both were working for the N Y
State Experimental Station when Peg got cancer and died in July 1967.
Harlow married Thelma Cromley Jensen in April 1969, moved into her house
in Stanley, selling the house on Grant Avenue. When he retired from NYS
he worked for the Town of Stanley mowing roadsides in the summer and
driving snow plow in the winter. He also had a bicycle repair shop in
his garage for many years and was known for miles around as the 'bicycle
man'.

My mother is Donna
Kingsley Payne. She worked at Geneva General for 21 years (1974-1995).
Her parents are Allen Kingsley and Kathryn Saxton Kingsley. Her
grandparents were Helena M. Close & Alton Kingsley. She recalls meeting
a Harlow Close at the hospital once.

Claire wrote in 9/2000
that when Parke was delivered by Caesarian and after his birth, as they
were closing the incision on Clara, Parke started to turn blue. The Dr.
turned to take care of him and the nurses were to finish. They
miscounted the gauze pads that had been used, one had been left in the
stomach and it caused gangrene, etc. Today they have antibiotics that
probably would have taken care of the problem.

Mrs. Delia Treat, 78,
of Little Marsh, died Tuesday in Wellsboro Hospital after a lengthy
illness. She was the widow of Claude Treat, whom she married in 1911
and who died in 1950. A resident of Chatham township all her life, she
was born there May 10, 1884, to Charles and Viola Rice Reynolds. She
was a member of the Little Marsh Methodist Church and the Middlebury
Grange. Mrs. Treat was a news correspondent for The Corning Leader for
many years. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Jesse Johnson of Middlebury
Center; sons Charles of Knoxville, and Gerald of Little Marsh. 10
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral services were
held at the home of the son, Gerald on Friday. The Rev. Dorr Harrington
of the South Byron, N.Y. Methodist Church officiated; and burial was in
Lee Cemetery, East Chatham Township.

Jim Close wrote an email. (Had a wonderful time at my reunion. On the
way out Sun am, stopped for coffee and (donut for ME). Standing in
line, Jim got to talking to a man and one thing led to another and he
said he had attended Close reunions as a young person. He didn't know
how he fit in. His deceased brother had been the genealogy person. Jim
brought him out to the car, assuring him that I could fit him in!!!! I
told Jim that the only way I could find him was to go page by page
looking for the name Miller!! I'm still in shock. I pulled out the
notebook with the original genealogy that I got from you. The numbers

No grandchildren. Loves to do trout fishing.
Son, Lewellyn was a
farmer and left the family in 1947/48 according to Linda, wife of
grandson, Lyle. Lewellyn's first wife, Erma told Sally 4/30/00 that in
1956 he won a lottery and received $160,000, went thru it all in 2 yrs.
and committed suicide, dying a pauper. He had divorced her & she went
to court and got $10,000 at $150. per month to raise the children. Linda

Doris Wass Doan sent a
note with some information on 8/4/2003. She states that she knew Edsil
and Hazel Close, that she 'went' with Edsil at one time. That there was
a lot of problems in that family and that Hazel changed her name.
The booklet "A
Sesquicentennial History of Chatham Township" states on page11 that
Hazel operated a beauty shop while Edsil managed a small store that
Armon Close built in the early 1930's. Edsil & Hazel soon after moved
to Blossbur and Armon ran the store for several yeas, closing in the
early 1940's.

HI. Cora says they met while she was in med school, Ivan worked in the
lab and she took a book to the lab, met him, he was a friend of her
brothers. Ivan went to lab & exray school in LA and also 1-2 years at
Pacific Union College. They eventually had a lab together, CORAVAN, but
it was more a mom & pop operation and not profitable, so they sold it.
She worked as a radiologist at LA County Hospital all thru this and up
till her back became too painful. After they sold their lab, Ivan read
an ad in the paper for a lab & Exray tech in a zoo, took the job for 13
years before he had to retire after neck surgery.
Talked to them
7/30/2001 - will send them ALL of Armon info when completed. Ivan was
having some tests run for 'spots' seen on a cat scan, so cannot come to
101st reunion. Will hope to come 2002.
Talked to Cora on
9/3/2001 and Ivan was sleeping, he has something in his abdomen that is
not in the GI track and has some spinal pain too. He has lost 10 punds
in the last 2 years and has indescribable feelings in his abdomen off
and on. Ivan is concerned about any surgery, waiting till the end of
Sept. and going to have them do another scan of the abdomen.
Sally sent Cheryl
addresses for Linda, Robert, Cynthia and said I would be sending
Daniel's later.
May have to have a
shunt put in. 7/14/2002 no shunt put in. On some medication. Sally
had a call from Cora on June 4, 2006 about his death and her health.

LINDEN:
Cora's sister, Sarah
is 5 years younger than her. She is Mrs. H. Ray Matthews at 2400 West
Main St., Alhambra, CA. Phone at home is 626-282-9025 and her husband
is a chiro and has his office in the back of the house, the number for
the office is 626-281-3362.
Cora called Sally on
June 4, 2006 to tell her about Ivan passing away about July 14, 2005.
He had dementia and she was taking care of him. He wanted her to
promise not to put him in a nursing home, she said she would not as long
as she could care for him and he did not get ugly and hard to take care
of. One day she was helping him get to the bathroom, when he fell and
knocked her down and fell on her, wedging them again the door and it
broke her hip and spine, she could not move. She told him she couldn't
help him because she was hurt. They lay there 3 days without anyone
knowing it, finally a neighbor realized there had not been any activity
at their house & papers were piling up. So the neighbor called the
police, they broke in and found them, Ivan was dead and Cora was
unconcious. Her comment was "they wouldn't punch her ticket" so she had
to live thru it all. She remained unconcious as she was taken to one
hospital and then to another, all she remembers was being in a truck.
However, that must have been the ambulance taking her from one hospital
to the other. She was fibrulating during this time. She then had to go
into a Skilled Nursing facility for 1 month till end of Aug. into Sept.
2005. She had 3 back surgeries in 1964 that never did take care of a
sciatic problem. She got disability retirement in 1970. Her step
granddaughter, Cynthia, stayed with her when she could. While Ivan
was suffering from his dementia, Cora would give him a sleeping tablet
and his pain pills at night so he would sleep and in 3 hours he would be
awake again wanting to fix popcorn or something. He was 86 when he
died, they had been married 58 years.
She said she was 79 on
the phone 7/30/2001. She sounds like "say goodnight, Gracie" Allen.
Cora went to Medical
College at Univ. of Calif and then to Calif. Colege of Medicine. She
was Chief Radiologiest in the L.A. County hospital. Cora says they met

Don't have much from
the 1700's, however some of the info you had made me respond... I have
decendants both in the Bates & Chapman families. Have some info from
that on Samual Bates & Say-Brook, Conn. I have a Samuel Bates (no BD on
him)(original surname as Bate) who had 9 children, married to Mary
Chapman, born 04/15/1655. and her brother Nathanael Chapman (through 2nd
marriage) married Hannah Bates, July 16, 1698. They had 5 children. She
died 12/1750. See "Robert Chapman - 1st Settlers of Say-Brook, Conn" on
the Chapman Surname Site for more info. Seems like there would have to
be a connection, Possibly your Samuel Bates would be a son from one of
these 2 families, timing wise and being from Say-Brook???. Do you have
any other names or more info. My side of the Bates came from Hull &
Kent, England, from there, Conn. New York, MI, & WI. Other Bates in my
family are Clara (my grandmother) George, Inez, Rollo, Claude, Charlie,
Ralph, Henry, Elsada, & Elsie Bates Please respond back if you would.

Havens O'Brien and Treasa were sisters. I have done a lot of Havens
family research and have many pictures. The only one I do not have a

Gertrude left her
family and no one has heard from or about her. Edward & Barbara were
adopted by Catherine & Ed Stafford. Thomas was age 2 when his mother
left and he was raised by his grandparents, he looked for his mother but
was unable to locate her. Gail had corresponded with Barbara.

Does anyone have
pictures or additional information on the Commercial House Hotel and Bar
in Addison, NY. The proprieter was Nathan Wellington ASHTON who lived in
Addison in 1907. His first wife was Nora RICE. When Nora died December
06, 1884 in Little Marsh, PA after giving birth to son, Clayton John
ASHTON, her sister Ella Louise RICE CHAPPELL came to live with Nathan
and Clayton. Ella married Nathan May 27, 1891 in Troupsburg, NY. They
had a son, Clyde. Ella had a daughter from her first marriage, Eva
Chappell.
