>   Doris's maiden name was Wass.  She has a wealth of info.  Mom and I went to Knoxville to meet her last year.  We also visited the Carpenter cemetary which is nearby.  She took us up on the back roads and showed us the Wass Road and family homestead.  As I said, she is 88 but really with it!  She took care of Harriet Bosard before she died.  Her daughters help her with genealogy things, but she does have a computer and is learning to use it!!   I will email her and see if she is up to a call from you.  Her husband's name was Donald.

Ancestor may have been: Andrew Bozzard (now spelled "Bosard"), a native of what is now Monroe county, Pennsylvania, came in 1813, and purchased a part of the farm originally occupied by John Parker. He was the first carpenter and joiner to become a permanent settler. He became a saw-mill owner and a manufacturer of household furniture, spinning wheels and coffins.  This comes from the History of Tioga Co.  Andrew K. Bosard began the manufacture of brick in 1848, and continued about twenty-five years, when he sold out to Henry Seely, who ceased business about 1880.

He is listed as Kirtland, age 31, a farmer,  on the Osceola 1880 Census with wife, Hattie as age 24, & children:  May & Ray.

I also checked some 1880 census records (CD's by LDS) and found James T. Westbrook age 35 b. NY with wife Harriett B. age 26 b. VT, Frank age 4 b. You can find them on the Tioga Co. website (Joyce Tice tricounties) on the 1860 census, Charleston Twp., Tioga Co. surname spelled Boccus  with his father George Bockus and mother Jane and siblings.  The father, George Bockus was in the 45th PA Vol. and died in the CW in 1863.  James and his brother Charles were both in the CW from Tioga Co. Sally, I am happy to hear from you again.  I am related to Charles Henry Bockus, brother to James A. Bockus--they were 2 children of ten born to George H. Bockus who served in 45th PA. Vol Civil War and died 1863 in MS.  James A. and Charles Henry both served in the CW also.  Charles Henry moved west to Nebraska.  James and Charles Bockus' mother married a second time to Hiram Mossman (Morseman) of Tioga Co. PA, and she died before 1877, but I have not been able to find her death record or burial.  If you should see anything, please let me know.  I live in Charlotte, NC.

Harriett Morse Westbrook Bockus is shown on the Riverside Cemetery, Knoxville, Deerfield Twp.,, Tioga Co. PA with her husband, James A. Bockus.  The 1900 Knoxville, Tioga Co. PA census p. 146 shows James Bockus, wife Harriett b. Dec. 1853 VT (her father born VT, mother born PA), married 1 year and she had 5 children, 3 living--3 Westbrook children are listed on James Bockus' 1900 census: Cora M. b. Aug. 1877, Alice b. Aug. 1886, Roy J. b. 1890, and (Sarah Bockus Jan. 1891 and Ada Bockus b. Feb. 1894 --Martha Robb was the mother of these two Bockus children by James A. Bockus). Pension records for James A. Bockus state he married Harriett Westbrook in Borden, NY Oct. 23, 1898 by G. N. White.  Pension record also states that Harriett B. Bockus died April 17, 1932 and her last check was sent to Knoxville PA.  Perhaps you can get a copy of her death certificate.

From notes of an aunt of mine, James Bockus and Martha Robb had 3 daughters, Stella May  who married Frank A. Farman, lived in Charleston Tioga Co. PA 1900-- Stella had a son, Elmer Farman who lived in Deanboro, NY in 1979, and Stella was Mrs. Howell living in Wellsboro in 1970. Sarah Bockus m. Raymond Merrick and had a son Henry and a daughter Malissa--of Tioga Co. PA, and Ada 'Adie' b. Feb. 1894 m. Claude Thompson and she died May 17, 1969 in Rochester, NY.  Ada had 3 children by her first marriage 2 boys nd 1 girl .  In 1969 Mrs. Claude Thompson was living in Williamson, NY near Rochester, NY.

Sally, if you know of anyone researching these families please tell them I would appreciate any data they may have.  As you can see my aunt's notes were not complete, and corrections might need to be made.  Please send any corrections you may have.  I look forward to hearing from you again.  Maryann

It has been awhile since our last email.  In checking my records, Do you have a George H. Bockus b. Dec. 181, 1867 in your family?  He married Emily Granger.  I have his father as Lezer (Eleazer) Bockus and his mother Elizabeth.  Does this match your data?  Also, Elizabeth's maiden name may be Niles--is that correct? Maryann Stalpers

The parents of this Charles are William D. Bockus and his wife, Lucy Simmons.  William D. Bockus was a younger son of George Henry Bockus (died in CW1863).  Also, it might make sense he was named Charles for William D. Bockus' older brother, Charles Henry, my gr-grandfather.

My aunt gave me this information and I may have more children for William and Lucy Bockus.  Maryann

Do you have information on Elizabeth Close, daughter of George and Rachel Close of Westfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania and her family. My husband was her grandson, Edwin S. Williams, Jr., although he never met her. Alice H. Williams

Edwin Samuel Williams was married once (1912)to Rosalba Cerussi in New York City. He died  age 61; she lived to 92. The family of Charles Cornelius Williams and Elizabeth Close had two sons: Edwin S and Arthur. The original settler in the tri-county area was Samuel Williams and his wife Louisa Densmore, parents of Charles C, Arthur and Mary. I found them in  the 1850 census in Burlington, Bradford County. Later Samuel was a widower with them  in Athens in 1880. I can not find his buriel place anywhere. My husband always said maybe it was in the backyard. There is a story connected to Charles, the Civil War veteran which I will send later tonight in a separate email--a scandalous tale. I may write a story about him if it all works out. Thanks for your answer. Alice H. Williams

Charles Cornelius Williams served as a ship's steward on a Union hospital ship off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina during the Civil War. When the war ended he went to Elmira presumably in search of work. He met and married Frankie Ward there. They had a child named Belle in 1969. Sometime after that he left and by his own account "wandered in the west", finally ending up in Westfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He boarded in the home of a local merchant, George Close (Cloose). Soon Charles was involved with the 17-year-old daughter Elizabeth. They soon told her parents they were married and she gave birth to Edwin Samuel Williams in 1878. Ten years or so later Charles was informed by his brother Arthur that Frankie Ward Williams was killed in an accident and he had seen her grave. On the strength of that news he and Elizabeth went to Corning and were married, again privately, by a minister there. Nine months later they had another boy, Arthur, named for his brother. Their son Edwin graduated from Pennsylvania State in 1900 with a degree in landscape architecture, which he used in New York City to open a partnership and prospered until the Great Depression when the CCC undercut his business and it collapsed. Soon after that he died. He never knew of his half-sister. My husband learned of her when he and I found the Civil War pension papers of Elizabeth Close when she applied in 1919 when Charles died. I have traced Belle in Elmira as far as the 1882 City Directory of Elmira when she was 13 years old. Her mother Frankie was killed when she was 10. Her grandmother Laura Ward died in 1895. Belle would have been 26 by then and probably married. I have combed Joyce Tice's Tri-County site and have found no mention of her after the Directory. Are there any local sites for marriage or death information that you know. I would love to have the name of husband and any children. Her children would be cousins to my husband and to our children. My husband died in 2001 and was still wanting to know the answers. This was a wrong done by a war-damaged person who otherwise led a very successful life. It might be these Elmira family members are trying to construct a family history also. Anyway, any light you can shed on this situation will be appreciated. NOTE: When my husband's father died in 1941 his wife and son, my husband later, went to Westfield to bury him in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery alongside his father and mother (although he is not included in cemetery writeup, they have pictures) and they were very well received by friends and family. Several came to see us in Alabama before we were transferred here to Richmond, VA. We did not tell them of Frankie Ward and Belle as we did not know it at the time. Must stop this and go to bed. It is almost daylight. Thank you for reading this far, Sincerely, Alice H. Williams

Notes for NELLIE SMITH:

From: ChandJo@aol.com   Sent: Thursday, December 20, 2001 7:29 PM

Attached is a 1908 photo that shows the second link that I have with the Close family.  Both my mother's side and my father's side are linked.   My grandmother (May Smith Briggs) was a sister of Nellie Smith Close (mother of John and Helena).  I will soon add the Smith branch to my site.

Nellie & May Smith were children of Almond John (A.J.) Smith (3/17/1836-1898) and Helen M. Croft (3/27/1817-4/9/1883).  Larry Briggs sent Chuck a memo stating that Helen Croft Smith was a great great granddaughter of George Augustus, Duke of Baden (Germany).  The lineage goes:

John Croft married Maria Bowman, daughter of George Augustus, Duke of Baden (Germany).

Their children ere:   Katherine married to Hendrich Lent

           James married to Hester Voight

           Polly married to Godfrey Voight

                  * John married Rebecca Mandeville

           Barbara married John Lent

John and Rebecca had: L.(?) married James Ashton

                Cornelius

                Samuel M.

                James married Hannah Edsall

                Sally married a Churchill

                Jane married Andrew Heath

                         * John M. married Rosella Lent

                Francis D. married Marietta Woods

                Mary Ann married a Wescott

Note:  Rosella Lent was the daughter of Abraham Lent, who was the son of Katherine Croft and Hendrich Lent, Katherine being the daughter of John Croft and Maria Bowman.  Double relations complicate things!

John M. and Rosella Lent had:    Samuel M. married Amelia Haymes

                              * Helen married Almond J. Smith!!!!!

                      Wayne married Louise Potter

Olive Ida married John West (Mildred Warren's father?

Lavern Lent married Wilmer H. West

                      Gertrude married a Stables

                      Clayton David married a Kinney

Check the above link.  Mildred Warren told Larry the story first, then his dad berified that i was a story.  Mildred always would say they were aristocracy and she tended to act that way.  Larry has more info on Rebecca Mandeville's family and Hendrich Lent.

Notes for CHARLES FREMONT CLOSE:

Charles invented the Cooper Tool for barrel making, hook for making rag rugs, and fishing lures.  This Cooper Tool is on display at the Blue Mountain Lake Museum in Blue Mountain, NY in the Adirondack Mountains.  At one time he worked for Eastman Kodak Co., and had some inventions but he was never reimbursed for his inventions.  He finally sold his remaining patents to Mack Tool Co. of East Rochester.  He went West in search of gold, but came back empty handed. He and his wife ran a boarding house on Rand Street in Rochester, NY before buying a small farm in Alexander, NY.   He was killed when his light touring car went over a 20' embankment in the Creek Road, Batavia, NY.

Marge DePauw writes on email:  Came across Grandfather Charles F Close's invention, the Cooper Tool and the advertising that went with it. He must have been a real brain. He invented so many gadgets and I have so few of them.   The Cooper Tool is on display at the Blue Mountain Lake Museum in Blue Mtn, NY in the Adirondack Mountains. There is another museum which I have forgotten the name, but will let you know in the next epistle .

Report from Jim & Bev Close: Jay D. Close, " a quiet, retiring, young electrician of this village, (Dundee, NY) was shot and instantly killed last Saturday morning at 3 o'clock by Charles Bennett, a negro, also of this village".  Jay had recently been made a "constable" and upon hearing a "disturbance" went to the scene at the Morrison home.  Mr. Bennett was reportedly intoxicated and had broken into the Bennett home.  Upon entering the house and speaking to "Charlie"  saying not to shoot, that he was a friend, he was subsequently shot by Charles Bennett. This occurred on Christmas eve 1910 in Dundee, NY.   Beth Ennis sent a copy of a clipping to Sally  from the Elmira Star Gazette (Feb. 1999) recognizing Jay for his work and adding his name to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.

In an email sent to Jim & Bev, this is what I said:

I came across something more last night that I feel confirms that the George-11 & Cora-14 that I earlier found being residents of Mansfield Soldiers Orphans School.   I found the names of a Cora & a George Close on the 1880 Census for the school.   http://www.rootsweb.com/~patioga/census/1880orph.htm

Then on the Almuni for 1926-27 a listing for:

George A. Close 1059 Walnut St., Elmira, N. Y.   didn't George & Katherine live at that address?  copy & paste into your Internet Explorer address:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/souvenir/sixteen.htm

So I feel this confirms that George is the one listed in the 1880 Census.   What is your thoughts?   And did anyone ever mention his being at the Orphan's School?

Is George A. Close at the above address the same as Jim's grandfather?  Maybe I am all wrong but, this is how I have figured it all out in my mind.   Lucy Caroline Lockwood Close died in April 1878 in Steuben Co., NY, leaving George, not yet 10; his sister, Cora, about 12 and my grandfather, Burton, just 2.   Newbury married Lodema Gibson Payne Oct. 1878, just 5 months after his 2nd wife, Lucy Caroline died.  Then in January of 1880 Newbury died and his 3rd wife, Lodema was pregnant, she delivered Archie in April 1880.   Newbury & Lodema were married in Steuben Co., NY & Archie was born in Weston, NY.

OK, so then, were George & Cora placed in the Orphan's School because Newbury could not care for them, or Lodema would not take over their care?   But, my question is who raised my grandfather, Burt Close who was only 2 when his mother died?  I have found Lodema & Archie's deaths out Calif.  To my knowledge my grandfather never lived in Calif.   I sure wish some of the older folks were still living to answer some questions.

Notes for HELEN ANNA MAY:

I sent an email to Mary Teeter of Yuma, Ariz and Morenci, MI in response to her request on the web for information on Polly Cloos/Close and Silas May. walmar@primenet.com.  Received a reply same day, 11/3/98

Hi, Sally

So glad you wrote; we know so little about the Cloos family. I have a very

little info about the family, but, unfortunately don't have it with me, as we

are in AZ for the winter and live in MI in the summer. However, Polly

Close/Cloos was my husband's great grandmother; her parents were Reuben Close b. 16 May 1798 and Harriett Seeley. Reuben's parents were Newbury Cloos, Sr. b. 17 Jun 1772 and died 02 Oct 1853 married to Esther Short b. 24 Jun 1776 and died 07 May 1829. That is the extent of the info I have with me. Walt says he remembers going to Close reunions around Coleman, MI as a kid, but doesn't really remember any of the people.

I would very much like to have any data you are willing to share and would gladly pay any copying or postage costs.

Are you interested in the May family (Polly married Silas May) I do have some info on that family with me, if you are interested in that.

Thanks, again, and hope to hear from you soon.

Mary Teeter

Sally:

As I was cleaning up the basement I came across the 1925 descendants of Newbury Cloos.  In it was confirmed that my grandfather's name was Edwin J Carpenter not "Edward".  I had suspected that this was the case for a long time as had Sally van Horn.

Another item that we confirmed was his sons death date.  It was July 16, 1904.

Sally

Thanks for your patience.  I was awhile in finding time to run over to the cemetary being that things are so hectic here at the start of the school year.  I too do genalogy and I find it to be a hurry up and wait sort of occupation!

The marker on his grave says Joseph Victor Cloos,  1880-1969.  The marker says Alcorn Mortuary. I have no information regarding where that mortuary is/was located.  It is possible that it became Owens Mortuary here in town or at least they might know something about it.  I suspect the County Courthouse here in Holbrook may have the death record.

To answer your questions about Joseph Victor Cloos I must say that you answered a question I had too.  I knew that Mr. Cloos was buried here in the Cemetary but I didn't know who he was related to.  When we came here in 1969 I recall a Majell Ross was teaching here in grades 1 & 2.  She left here in the early 70's due to poor health and I believe she moved to the Fort Bragg, CA area.  I haven't heard anything about her in many years.  If I can help you in any way please let me know.  This is actually my own e-mail address.  We had the first address on the campus.  The school's address is hischool@cybertrails.com.    Sincerely, Gena Rowland

Hello - I am looking for information on a relative, Joseph Victor Cloos, born 1879.  He was married to Annie Majell Ross and he has a step daughter, Majell Sine Prolle.  I have been told that Majell Sine Prolle was teaching at the Navajo Indian School when Joseph Victor Cloos died and that he was buried there.  Can you verify this information or tell me how and where I can find out anything about Majell Sine Prolle.  I have been working on the family genealogy for 3 years in preparation for a book.  No one has anymore to add to Joseph Victor Cloos than what I write here.  If you cannot help me, please point me in the right direction for help.  Thank you so very much.  Sally Cloos Meabon

Eve Eller Moore writes - Beekeeper, ah yes.  I had totally forgotten.  I recall that my grandfather said that he raised bees and sent them to Europe or Germany after the war because the bees had been wiped out and they are so important.  I used to love to tell my little friends that my great uncle mailed bees overseas.   I had no idea where he kept the bees.  Such a good recollection thanks to Ivan

Hi  - Thought you both would be interested in this conversation.  This is my message to these people where Joseph Victor Cloos was supposedly buried, so here is their answer to my email, which is on the bottom.  Now to go in search for this gal in the Fort Bragg, CA area, do you know where that is????  She is probably deceased, but maybe some way we can find a death certificate or something - do you think so, Eve?   Let me hear from you both.  Thanks, Sally

One of the investigators in my office lives in Mendocino County where Annie Ross may have gone to when she left Arizona.  He handles the investigations in that area for our office.  He is going to go to the recorders office on his lunch hour sometime next week and try to find a death certificate for Annie Ross (wife of Joseph Victor Cloos).  So, hopefully when you return from your trip to Florida I will have something to report.  This investigator is also into working on his genealogy so he understands.

Child of JOSEPH CLOOS and ANNIE ROSS is:

On email from Jim VanSant on 7/28/2001, he writes:  Dear Sally; Thank you for contacting me and allowing me to update your genealogical information. I have a book in my library that belonged to Philistia Belle Cloos of Burr Valley Tehama California with her signature dated 1895. It is "Ahn's First German Book" dated 1873. so it is fun for me to hear from you.  (He tried to send a copy of some of this book and it created problems with the computer - I said thanks, appreciate him trying)

I remember meeting Armon and Philistia when I was a youngster in Stockton, California. She told me a story about how as a child, she had burned her head severely by pulling a pot of boiling water and lye used in making soap off the top of the wood burning stove. She related how she was treated for the burns by an Indian with herbs. It certainly made an impression on my young mind at the time.

I would be very happy to supply you of any information, but I really don't know what information you are looking for.  The only know very little of information on Vicenta from my grandmother.  I noticed that on Vicenta's last name, it was Perez.  She is Vicenta Perez Aflleje before she was married.   I have located Arnold and Muriel Cloos, and they are residing in Ohio.  Are you related to the Cloos?  If you want their telephone, home address, and email address, I can give that to you, but first I have to get permission from Muriel to give it out if that is alright with you.  Thank you once again for your information.

Joan Umphrey

Hafa Adai, I am from Guam also. Both my parents are Guamanian. I was just curious to find out about starting a Family Tree and to my surprise I found your message board. My dad is from Piti. From what I know our last name "Aflleje" is from one family (clan, tribe etc.). So I'm thinking we have to be related....I'll have to get back to you later and hopefully with more info. I'm from Carson, Ca. are you familiar with the area? Maybe you already know my parents George & Juanita? Well, it was a pleasure!

Email on 1/10/01

Hello,  I spoken to Muriel Wright Cloos, and I gave her your email address, and she said that she will get to you as soon as possible.  Any way, if you are wondering  when and where Vicenta was born, here is her birth date. April 29, 1897 she was born in Sumay Guam, died in April 23, 1974 in Red Bluff Tehama California.  Her maiden name is Aflleje.  She drop her last name, and kept her middle name which it is Perez, so since she married, she is Vicenta Perez (Aflleje) Cloos.  I don't know if you or your husband was or is in the military, but in the military, they want you to drop your last name and keep your middle name.  But if you are not in the military, Guam wants you to drop you middle name and keep your last name as middle and use your spouse last name as your last name.  I hope I am making you understand what I am saying instead of confusing you.  Well, I hope I answer you questions for Vicenta Perez Cloos.  Take care. Joan
