Notes for SOPHIA CLOOS:

Steve Johnson (ggg grandson of Sophia's brother Reuben) reports her being born in NY.   Traci Spears '59 is the gggg grandchild of Sophia.  Cloos cemetery records both Charles and Sophia's deaths as Jan. 27, 1875

This comes from Brian Copestick, IN 6/2000 (BACope@AOL.COm)  Sophia was my GGGrandmother. Her son Leonidas Avery married Lois Amelia Treat. Their son Joseph Avery married Cora Davis. Their daughter Joyce Avery married John Copestick. I am their son. I've more info but not sure just how to present it in this format.

Sally found a notation on the records in the Wellsboro Court House that Sophia died just 2 hours and 10 minutes before her husband, Charles died.  Rather interesting!

Notes for CHARLES AVERY:

Cloos Cemetery records both Charles & Sophia deaths, as Jan. 27, 1875.  Traci Spears reports that "Sophia died one hour before her husband, quite a remarkable coincidence, after a married life of nearly half a century."  Traci also reports that "Charles Avery was reared on a farm, and came to Tioga Co., PA in 1824, purchasing a farm of 160 acres in Chatham Township where he was engated in agricultural pursuits until his death."  "Politically, Mr. Avery was a Democrat in early life, and later a Free Soiler.  he served as collector of Chatham Township for ten years, and was one of the respected citizens of that locality."  In the 1897 "History of Tioga County Pennsylvania, Vol II" on page 458 it says Charles Avery, a native of Madison County, New York, came to Tioga County in 1826, located on the tract of land on which the East Chatham postoffice is situated.  This he sold in 1827 to Sylvester Treat, and located on the farm nowowned by Edward Carl.  Here he passed the remainder of his life.

Notes for DAVID CLOSE:

WESTFIELD BOROUGH.     By Butler B. Strang.

It was about the year 1840, that Westfield began to take on the aspect of a village. In that year the Rev. Francis Strang came into the town from Lawrenceville and built a store, which is still standing and was the first regular store building in what is now the borough. Soon afterward David Close came from Chatham, and provided a hotel by enlarging and improving a building in which entertainment for travelers had been furnished by James Turner and George Hunter.

The 1860 Westfield Township Census has David as a farmer worth $7500.

Traci Spears (from line of Sophia Cloos) has David's last name spelled Cloos.  Jean Doan has his birth as 1808.  So does Mary at Chaddor@aol.com.

David's great great granddaughter, Audrey Elaine Chouffi, says he was born in Cowanesque Valley, PA.  David Schaff has his date of 1809 in Deerfield Township,Tioga Co., PA, so does Steve Johnson (1850).

He is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Westfield Township, Tioga Co., PA.  1850 Census noted Newbury as a farmer with land worth $800.  Steve Johnson reports his death as 1/16/1880.

According to records compiled by Ernest V. Close in 1925, Newbury Cloos, Sr. died October 2, 1853 and his wife, Esther Short Cloos died May 7, 1829.  However, on the gravemarkers in Carpenter Cemetery, Knoxville, PA., his death date is written as May 7 and hers as October 2, the years remaining the same in both places.  As of August 1993, the original family homestead/farm house, east of Knoxville, Pa on Rt. 49, was still occupied by descendants of the Cloos family, Wally and Esther Doane (great, great granddaughter of Esther Cloos Daniels - 1916).  It is probable that all 11 children born to this family were probably born at that home.  Three of the sons changed the spelling of the name from Cloos to Close. (Reuben, David and Ambrose).

In April 1999 Sally visited the farm, as well as the David Close house just a few houses east of this farm.  Mary Wood Wetmore and her husband bought the David Close place (built in 1835 by David) and Mary still lives there in 4/99.  She is a sister to Wally Wood on the Newbury Cloos Farm.  Their great grandfather, Oliver Wood bought the Newbury Cloos Farm in 1861 when he came to the area from NJ.

Mary says the original Cloos house was moved west of where the house now is, a new one was built in 1886 on the orginal site of the older one.  Then the older one was moved across the road for tenants to occupy and later burned.

DAVID CLOOS, a son of Newbury and Esther Cloos, was born in Deerfield township, Tioga county, March 7, 1809, and was reared on the old homestead. Sally,  I just read your various posting on the Tioga Co rootsweb page.  I noted with interest Newberry Close, his son marrying a Sweet, another son named Ambrose.

i am interested in a Sweet family from Tioga, one of whose members was Newberry Sweet, born circa 1813.  Also ( potentially another family, but may be the same) Sweet family who had a son Ambrose.  Coincidences of names was intriguing.

Please see my posting    http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Pa/Tioga/1093

which describes all I know about these folks   If you have any connections, I'd love to know!

Notwithstanding the assuring tone of the letter of the secretary in reference to an advance of the British, grave apprehension did exist that the Seneca Indians, who at that time owned and occupied the Genesee Valley, and who had allies of the British in the Revolutionary war, would make an incursion down the Troup's Creek trail and destroy our settlements. So disquieted was the community that Joshua Colvin, who had purchased and at Academy Corners and had lived upon it four years, went to Herkimer county, N.Y., in 1813 and remained there until the cessation of hostilities, when he returned to Deerfield.

At the time Buffalo was burned by the British in 1814 Newbury Cloos, John Knox, Charles Carpenter, Charles Costley, Elanson Seelye and Eleazer Seelye volunteered to serve against the enemy, and went to Big Tree to tender their services. John Howland conveyed the party there home again. Their services were not needed.

The records of the township give no complete list of the men who entered the army from Deerfield during the rebellion, and the recollections of individuals at best will fail to name them all. It is remembered that among the first to enlist were Truman Gilbert, William A. Falkner, Martin V. Purple, Lafayette Godfrey, Luther Matteson and Lurthe G. Bulkley. Falkner was a lieutenant and some others of the above privates in Company L 2nd Pennsylvania cavalry.

In October 1862 a draft was made for the citizens liable to military duty in Deerfield. Menzo Knox and Elias Clark were drafted, and paid the United States $300 each as commutation for military service. Richard Ham and George Smith were drafted, and served nine in company A 171st Pennsylvania. Micajah Inscho, of Deerfield, served in the same company as a substitute for Alanson Donaldson, of Wellsboro.

Subject: Ester and Henry Daniels

I have them in my database for no apparent reason.  That is, they don't connect with anyone.  I think I must have been entering data from a hardcopy family data sheet and gotten interrupted.  I'll see if I can find the original.  I'm sure I didn't throw it out, but my filing system leaves a lot to be desired.

The data sheet may have some children, but I made a note that the 1860 census for Chatham Twp., now on Joyce's site, lists 5 children for them.  It's on page 99, line 27, sheet 137 of that census.

You probably have the following already, but I'll send it just in case.  I have Henry Frank Daniels as b. 1817 in NY and d. 1899.  This is corroberated by the 1860 census for Chatham Twp., and the cemetery list for the Butler Hill Cemetery, Deerfield Twp.

For Ester, and I didn't have her last name, I only have: b. 1816-1817 in PA, d. 1860-1866.  Another reason for thinking I was interrupted, is that I didn't enter any annotation as to the source or reasoning for her death dates.  I have no reason to doubt your death date for her.

The only Tioga Co. person with a Close surname that I knew, was Angie J. Close, wife of Ben Blanchard.  And those are little kid memories of she and O.B. as "old people".  I'm a cousin of Rieta Boyden (via Mark Treat Owlett) and of Ben's niece, Emily Seely Blanchard (via Marcus B. Seely).  Also Emily's sister, Lena, married my, Great-uncle, David Z. Goodrich.  The Tioga Co. gene pool gets so intertwined.

Thanks for your data, and I hope the census lead helps.  If you have any trouble with it, please let me know.  Good luck.

Sally received the pictures that Paula sent of her mother, grandparents and great grandmother, Flora on 7/18/2003.  Paula said they would not be able to attend the reunion in 2003 because the son & wife were coming from Japan.

Mildred Becraft Michener told Sally on 7/19/2003 that Flora always said she was full blooded Mohawk Indian and she smoked a clay pipe.  Mildred remembers her sitting by the stove, her legs crossed, she like tea and made it with loose tea and then tell peoples fortune from the leaves.

Sally,

The Harriet Lockwood you have, was she married to Reuben Cloos?  I see on a search engine a webpage that I can not open that says "... Parents: Newbury Cloos and Caroline Lockwood. Children were: Harlow Malone Close.

Burton L. Cloos. Butler F. Cloos. Parents: Reuben Cloos and Harriet Lockwood. ...

www.familyorigins.com/users/r/i/c/Bradley-Gene-Rice/FAMO1-0001/ d32.htm

I cannot open that webpage because it has been moved or deleted.  (Oh gees now I am typing in green from the above green sentence I guess)  The webpage was titled

Howland/Rice connection of Bradley G. Rice. Sounds like Caroline married Newbury Cloos and Harriet married Reuben Cloos, is that what you have?

Sally,

It's been a crazy year and I have not done any research on the Slocum family.  So I have no new information for you.  If I find anything, I will let you know, or you can check back periodically.  If you change your email address, please let me know.

Thanks, Barbara

Sally,

Hi, my name is Barbara Slocum.  I am responding to the query you posted on the Joyce Tice's Tri-county Website about a year ago.

Have you found out anything more about the Abbie SLOCUM who married Newbury CLOSE?  I have 3 Abby Slocums in my husband's Genealogy, but  2 died single in their teens.

The other Abbie Slocum I have was the daughter of Azariah and Eunice Slocum, b. abt. 1832, probably in Massachusetts.  She is still single and at home in 1850 (Chatham).  I have no more knowledge of her except she died before Sept 1883.  [In her mother's death notice of Sept. 1883, only 1 son (Clinton) is still living. ]

After looking at your other queries, I can see that the time and place are right for her to be the same Abbie Slocum I have.  Have you gotten any other responses on her?

Thanks,

Barbara Slocum

tislocum@bellsouth.net

 Sally,

My husband, Tom Slocum, is son of Richard Slocum and Corene Ashley.

Richard is son of Benjamin Slocum and Ella Odle.

Benjamin is son of Clinton Dewitt Slocum and Matilda Shepherd, who lived in Little Marsh, Chatham Twp., Tioga Co., PA.

Clinton is son of Azariah Slocum and Eunice who came from CT to NY and then to Chatham in the late 1840s.

The Abbie Slocum I am referring to is an older sister of Clinton.  Her father, Azariah, was born in RI and her mother in CT.  They were married about 1830 in CT or MA.  Abbie is the 2nd child of Azariah, b. 1832 in MA according to the 1850 Chatham Census.  Their other children are Clarinda, b. 1831 in CT, Amos, b. 1837 in NY, Clinton, b. 1838 or 1841 in NY and George, b. 1846 in NY.  The only one I have further information on is Clinton.   Azariah is listed in the 1840 census in Cayuga Co., NY and in the 1830 census in Colebrook, Litchfield Co., CT.

Tom and I do get to Tioga county once or twice a year because his parents still live in Chemung county, NY.  Tom is a cousin (4th or 5th) to Scott Gitchell who works full time for the Tioga County Historical Society.  He has been a great help to me in locating sources.

I am originally from Ithaca, NY and am currently living in the metro Atlanta area due to a job transfer from CT about 14 years ago.  Too bad I wasn't into genealogy when I lived there!!!

Do you know anything about when Newbury Close and Abbie Slocum were married?  Apparently their marriage and her death both occurred between the 1850 and 1860 census.  Do you have the birth dates for their children?  Or any other information about them?

Thanks for your help.

Hello Barbara - It is nice to hear from you.   NO, haven't gotten any info on Abbie Slocum.   I am sending along what I know and maybe I sent that to you before.  It seems this could very well be the same person.   How do you connect with her?    Would be interested in hearing about your family.   My grandfather was the Burton Close that was born to Newbury's 2nd wife,  Caroline Lockwood in 1876.  My father, Harlow was the baby in the Burton & Mary Ector Close family, and I was 3rd in line in my family.   Where do you live?  I was born & raised in Geneva, NY but I am living in NC and we get up to the Tioga Co. area once a year (used to be 2-3 times) but our health doesn't allow anymore.   We have attended the Cloos/Close Reunion most years, but will not make it this year.   Look forward to hearing from you again.    Thanks, Sally Close Meabon

TIOGA COUNTY’S PATRIOTISM IN THE CIVIL WAR--- ROLLS OF COMMISSIONED OFFICERS.

Tioga county was not settled or formed until some years after the close of the Revolutionary war, and consequently, none of her sons were actors in those scenes which "tried men’s souls." A number of the old veterans came to the county as pioneers and identified themselves with it’s early settlement, and now they sleep within its borders.

During the war of 1812 a number went forth to battle, and when the British burned Buffalo, and a messenger came riding through the valley of the Tioga, the hardy pioneer threw down his ax and hastened to the frontier.

But it was reserved until 1861 for the sons of Tioga to display their courage and the love of country. There were then about 32,000 inhabitants in the county and about 4,000 between the ages of eighteen and forty-five, liable for military duty. Over 2,000 of that number went into the Union army, and were engaged on the battle fields from the Pennsylvania line to the Gulf of Mexico, wherever the rebellion existed. Many lie buried in southern soil, who died on the field of battle, in hospital, or in prison, and many returned with honorable wounds and honorable records. Every mail from the south and every click of the telegraph was watched with intense anxiety by those at home who had fathers, brothers and husbands in the great and terrible struggle with secession; and scarcely a day passed that either the mail or the telegraph did not bring sad news from the front, of some loved one who had passed away in the battle for the life of the nation. Scarcely a family in Tioga county but had some near and dear friend in the army. The anxiety and suspense were terrible.

Notwithstanding companies were formed in various sections of the county and large bounties offered by township, borough and county authorities, many enlisted in companies and regiments gotten up in other sections of the State, and very many went over the line and attached themselves to companies or regiments formed in Steuben, Chemung, or other counties of New York. It has been estimated by those competent to judge that fully five hundred privates from Tioga county were enlisted in this manner and lost their identity as belonging to Tioga county; and it is therefore concluded that Tioga county’s sons to the number 2,500 were engaged in the war for the Union. The historian who should gather a full and complete list of the citizens of Tioga county who participated in the war would find it a lifelong task. The searching of either township or county records or those in the adjutant generals’ offices of Pennsylvania and New York will not show the facts, for the men were accredited to the township and county where they enlisted, and not as hailing from Tioga county. It is only by a personal acquaintance with the soldier that the true record can ever be made up. This personal acquaintance no one posses, and the only way that an approximately true record can be made is for the survivors to communicate with some central organization.

FORTY-FIFTH PENNSYLVANIA INFANTRY.

This regiment was organized Oct. 21 ’61 at Harrisburg. It was engaged in the battles of James Island, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Siege of Vicksburg, Jackson, Blue Springs, Campbell Station, Siege of Knoxville, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, North Anna, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad and Poplar Spring Church. Francis M. Hill was lieutenant-colonel. John F. Trout was commissioned major to rank from July 10 ‘64; mustered out with regiment July 17, ‘65. D. Dickinson was commissioned adjutant, to rank from Oct. 19 ‘64; mustered out with regiment July 17, ‘65.

Subject: Philip Cloos & Philia Love

<<I am searching for detailed information on the family of Phillip T. Cloos and Philia Love. He was born between 1836-1837 and died 3/14/1916. These are their children:

    MARGARET CLOSE married LESTER RICE.

    EDWARD A. CLOSE, born 1857 & died 1907

LUELLA P. CLOSE. married Burton Keeney. She died 1965.

    Can anyone help me out?>>

Philia Love was the daughter of Wilkins Love (son of John, son of Thomas, son of Gabriel, the immigrant ancestor) and Sarah Clark (whose ancestry I don't know, though I believe her parents were Samuel & Wealthy [-----] Clark, of Groton NY and then Harmony NY.

This is what I've got on file about Philia's children, surname Cloos:

  i. Eda or Edward A., b. 15 Mar 1857.

ii. Margaret, or Sarah Maggie, b. 2 Apr 1861.

  iii. Luella P., b. 3 Jan 1872.

Philip T. Cloos d. in Feb 1916. Philia A. (Love) Cloos d. 12 Jan 1930, at the home of her dau. Margaret Rice. [The birthdates come from an old notebook; the deathdates come from Cousin Laura Love Macdanald, now deceased.]

Are we cousins? I'd be glad to share information and scans of photos. Philia Love's brother Seth Leroy Love (1839-1909) was my great-grandfather, who left NY for Pennsylvania, and later moved to Warren, Ohio. I've got only three photos of him, and no photos of his siblings. I have one photo that may or may not be of Sarah Clark---actually photos of two different women, and I don't know which is which, or if either is Sarah Clark. Wilkins Love died in 1850, so no photo of him is likely to exist.

I see the date of your query is old (2001), but maybe you'll find this information useful.

Cheers. Jacob Love in DC. [Jacob Wainwright Love III]

Sally, if you know any descendants of these people, please let me know. Many of them remained in their area of Pennsylvania, while my forebears moved away. Our line of the family apparently hasn't had contact with the other lines since around 1890, except with the line of Burnett Isaac Love, whose son, Burnett Streeter Love, was the father of Laura Love, who was a close friend of my father's uncle, and whom my father met at that uncle's funeral, in the mid-1970s; but all are now deceased.

Cheers. Jacob

Jean & Victor Cloos wrote in Jan. 2000:  Vic & Margery conferred and came up with a few thoughts about Myra.  She was a teacher who lived on Dee Cloos farm during the last years of her life.  Jean Cloos was 7 or 8 and remembers her reciting long poems, drilling us in addition and multiplication tables and mesmerizing us with her detailed storytelling ability to get our attention.  She would hook us with her cane as she sat in her chair by the window.  She added a special dimension to our family life as an unforgettable individual, always making sure we used proper English and good manners.   She was one of several Cloos teachers who passed their teaching genes to me and my daughter, Jill.

An E. Myra is buried in Middlebury-Union Cemetery with the date of birth as August 25, 1869 and death as November 26, 1953.

AMBROSE CLOSE, originally spelled "Cloos," is the oldest son of David and Maria Cloos. He was born in Deerfield township, Tioga county, March 4, 1835, and came to Westfield with his parents when but five years of age. He was reared in Westfield, and educated at Union Academy and Alfred University. Mrs. Close died November 9, 1891, aged fifty-nine years. She was an attendant of the Universalist church, a charitable and kind neighbor, and a good wife and mother, who enjoyed the love and esteem of all who knew her. "In October 1862 a draft was made for the citizens liable to military duty in Deerfield. Menzo Knox and Elias Clark were drafted, and paid the United States $300 each as commutation for military service. Richard Ham and George Smith were drafted, and served nine in company A 171st Pennsylvania. Micajah Inscho, of Deerfield, served in the same company as a substitute for Alanson Donaldson, of Wellsboro."

Just think, 1862 was a year before Elias and Marietta's first child, Byron, was born. If he had been drafted and killed in the war, there never would have been Byron, Cecil, Rae, Clare, Rosamond, and Horton Clark, and I wouldn't be here either !     Interesting, huh ?      Tom Currier

I need to make a correction on the info I gave you: It was the 1860 Census of Elkland Bourough, Tioga Cty, Pa where William Trim and Family are listed under the name of Trinn. It shows George as being 3 years old at the time. William Trim is in the 1850 Census of Elkand, age 19 or 20. In the 1860 Census George has a 1 year old brother Holbert or Hilbert as written in the Cemetery listing. Hilbert dies at age of 12 from drowning in 1870. It makes sense that George S Trim and wife Cora Close would name a child Hulbert. David Close and wife Maria are found with their family in the 1850 Cenus of Westfield, Tioga Cty PA. I also ran across a School named Cloos in Chatham, Tioga Cty PA, 1897 and a web-page with a document of John Short who died interstate with David Short and Newberry Cloos being administrators.

Daniel is next found in Otsego County, NY where he married Amy Northrop and had eight children.   He is buried with Amy in the Elk Run-Borden, New York cemetery.   I could find no stone for Harriet, even though her obit says she is buried there.

Researching the New York 1880 Census makes sense because his spouse, Amy Northrop [9119], died in GSEST. 1876 in (GSEST. Steuben County, New York) and his child, Carrie Bates [620], was married in GSEST. 1885 in (GSEST. Steuben County, New York). The 1880 census is important because it contains birthplace information for parents of the people listed, as well as the relationships between people living in the household.

NOTE: This suggestion is important because his father's birth place and mother's birth place have not been recorded, and you could obtain this information by researching this record.

GenSmarts has hypothesized DATES and a PLACE for you (indicated by the GSEST. prefix) to come up with this suggestion. The basis for these hypotheses were:

GSEST. Steuben County, New York was estimated because his child, Morris Northrup Bates [9092], was born in SEP-1872 in Mack Hill, Steuben Co., NY.

GSEST. 1876 was estimated because he was born on 19-SEP-1817 in Quebec, Canada.

GSEST. 1885 was estimated because his child, Carrie Bates [620], was born in 1867 in (GSEST. Steuben County, New York) and his grandson, Ernest Runyon [9120], was born in 1886 in (GSEST. Steuben County, New York).

Some background on Daniel H. Bates [968]: He was born on 19-SEP-1817 in Quebec, Canada, and he died on 28-JUL-1900 in (GSEST. Steuben County, New York). He married Amy Northrop [9119] on GSEST. 1836. He married Harriet Church [595] on 12-MAY-1864, and had the following children: Floyd [622] (GSEST. 1873), Carrie [620] (1867), and Morris [9092] (1872).

Here is what this family might look like in 1880:

Notes for HENRY J. SHAFF:

Henry J. was less than 2 years old when his parents moved to Tioga Co., Pa.  He was reared on the homestead in Middlebury township.  In the spring of 1854 he went to Wisconsin and worked the lumber woods of that state a few years.  In 1858 he and his brother Porter D. purchased the old homestead of 205 acres, on which they both reside (1897).  Here he followed farming up to 1866 when he and Newbury Cloos, Jr. built a saw-mill on Losey Creek.  He followed that business up to December 1894 quite successfully.  "Mr. Shaff has been identified with many of the leading industries of the county and every dollar he now possesses was earned by hard work and rigid economy."  He is a Democrat, served as a

school director for 3 years;  is a member of K of H and one of the enterprising farmers of the community. (1897).

From  the Westfield Free Press: "The People of Middlebury"-Middlebury 6/27/1884

"Among the many improvements in this fine farming district are those being made at Middlebury Center, where many fine new buildings have lately been put up and more are in process of construction.  the elegant  residence of H. J. Shaff is certainly a handsome building and establishes the fact that the builder, Mr. F. Rumsey of Mansfield, Pa., is a skillful mechanic, and also that the owner and designer of this mansion is a person who has good taste and an eye to form beauty."

The 18999 Tioga County Directory says:  Shaff Henry J (Keeneyville) r 3, farmer, 204

from The Elkland Journal:       June 1, 1899     Terribly Injured by a Hog

Last Wednesday morning Mr. Henry J. Shaff of Keeneyville, had an encounter with a vicious boar which resulted in his serious injury.  His recovery from his wounds is still a matter of some doubt.

Mr. Shaff was in the hog-yard on the place of Mr. John West, when a large boar suddenly rushed at him and struck him with its tusks on the right leg above the knee, cutting a long gash to the bone and knocking Mr. Shaff down.  The infuriated hog then strick him agian on the same leg a little above the first wound, cutting another deep gash.  The muscles

were severed and Mr. Shaff was helpless.  He called for assistance as the hog attacked him the third time.

Mr. Shaff was assisted out of the yard and in the house and later was taken home.  His wounds were dressed, and it is hoped they will speedily heal.  The physician says that there is a great danger from blood-poisoning in such cases, and that is the only thing that is

apprehended now. -Agitator

6/1/99  From Larry to his brother Chuck Briggs ( great grandson)

Hi,  We hope you had as nice a weekend and we did here.  Mom was here for a picnic lunch on the porch.  Joan had to go see her Mother at the Green Home later in the afternoon.  I took the opportunity to question Mom and make some notes on her family.  I am not too sure what the questions were you had in mind in your note and who you were conversing with.

Jane Cloos was the daughter of Newberry Cloos Jr. and Cynthia Church. They lived where Kevin Houghtaling does now.  The place is often called the Clark Gee place.  That Clark Gee was an uncle of Leander Gee.  Our Clark Gee also lived there before Houghtalings.  The Cloos Family members were always staunch Democrats.  When part of the family wanted to become Republicans they change the spelling to "Close".  Our Great Grandmother Jane was caught in the middle and became a Prohibitionist.  I believe there is a WCTU marker on her grave.  Present day Close/Cloos members are still often divided the

same.

I believe that Newberry Jr. had a large family.  I have seen a published Cloos Family Members Book that we once had.  Mom believes that she gave it to Carl.  Possibly there is one at the TCHS.  I will check with Scott.  As I remember it started with Newberry, Sr. who had 12 children and each of them including Newberry, Jr. had big families.  Mom's generation was the last listed and it included about half of Tioga Co.

She does know that Jane had a brother Wilmot Cloos who died young and had no family, a brother Dr. Luther Cloos who had his office in his home-the old Keeneyville Meth. Parsonage-married Cora Hazelett and had a son Wilmot-named  for his uncle Wilmot, (Dr, Niles was there before him and built the house).Dr. Luther ("Lute") Cloos studied medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School.

In other information John "Wesley" Coolidge married Catherine Nickerson.  One of their daughters was Mary Pamella ("Millie") married Judson Shaw. Grandma Shaw also had 2 brothers- Older was Otis Coolidge whose daughter(not married) Faye and son Ross both went to St. Louis.  The younger brother Owen Coolodge moved to Jersey Shore.  A sister Nellissa was not married.  Another sister Anna was Mary Jessup's mother (Her house was where Grandma Palmer had

her appt on Charles St, and they were cousins).

Maybe you can fill in some of the blanks when you see Mom at the Reunion. She said she should have paid attention to the stories her parents and grandparents were always talking about.  Sound familiar!

Notes for CORA L. HAZLETT:

Cora was the daughter of Amariah [has several alternate spellings] Hazlett (1827 - 1895).  He was the son of Archibald Hazlett (1803 - 1888).   Archibald was a son of Sarah/Sally Campbell (1777 - 18xx), who was a daughter of Jos. Campbell (1748 - 1824) and Mary Harper (1749 - 1844) .

She is the daughter of Amariah & Janet Hazlett of Middlebury Center.  William Thompson stated on email 11/13/00 (bill.thompson@wtassoc.com) that Amaria Hazlett is on the 1860 census for Middlebury Twp. as age 33, farmer, Real property=2000, Personal property = 500, b. PA.  In the Annals of the Beecher's Island Presbytian Church, Lucy Dunham (Hazlett) gives his name as "Amma".  The 1860 census show his wife as Jeanette, age 22, b. PA.

He was one of 10 or 11 children of Archibald Hazlett, the eldest child of Samuel Hazlett and Sarah Campbell, mentioned at the top of my posting.  Munsell's 1883 History of Tioga County has bits on Sam Hazlett and his brother John, both in the Nelson Twp History section and in the appendix. You can see it on Joyce' site or I can send that material.  It says the Hazletts had a farm in Stroudsburg, PA, before buying the property of pioneer Daniel Strait.  Sam farmed and operated a saw mill which supplied the lumber to build the Beechers Island Presbyterian Church, of which he was an elder for many years.  I have additional material on the Hazletts and Campbells journey to Nelson and their early days there.  There is a tradition that Sam Hazlett and Sarah Campbell, who was called Sally, were married during their voyage to America, but no substantiation has been found.

The 1860 Middlebury Twp census shows for Archibald, 57, Farmer, b. PA. Other records show him as born in MD, which has never made sense to me.  Amaria's household is adjacent.

Sarah was my 2nd great grand-aunt.  My goal is to locate all the descendants of her parents: Joseph Campbell, b. 1749 in Scotland, and Mary Harper, b.1749 in Scotland, both buried in Nelson.  We have resumed Campbell reunions after a 65 year gap and will hold one in Nelson next summer.

Anderson's 1908 Directory of Tioga Co. has David as a teacher, living in Keeneyville.

The 1880 Middlebury Twp. census has Luther's sister Jane living with him and Cora, and the 1893 history has quite a bit on him and his medical practice, as you probably know.

Cora's parents were Amariah (sometimes Amma or Amaria), b. 2/14/1827 in PA, d. 10/3/1895, bur. MUC, and Jenette/Janet Carpenter, b. 2/5/1835, d. 1909, also bur. MUC.  Cora had a brother Archibald, b. 1867 or '68, but I don't know anything about him.

I'll check with a desc. of one of Amariah's brothers.  Perhaps he has something more on Cora or Margaret.

Subject: Margaret E. Cloos Relationship

Margaret's dad was my 4th cousin.  As you know, David's mother was Cora L. Hazlett (1854 - 1932).  And she was the dau. of Amariah [has several alternate spellings] Hazlett (1827 - 1895).  He was the son of Archibald Hazlett (1803 - 1888).   Archibald was a son of Sarah/Sally Campbell (1777 - 18xx), who was a dau. of Jos. Campbell (1748 - 1824) and Mary Harper (1749 - 1844) -- my common ancesters with Margaret.  I am searching for all of Jos. & Mary's descendants because I am Pres. of a reunion association for that family (or maybe it's the other way around).

Hi Sally,

I just sent the first message to you via csm92@wilmington.net but that

bounced back. You may end up getting two of these.

We have an Ida Cloos that married into the VanCise line.  I believe her

parents were William Cloos and Harriet. ? Maybe son of Caleb Cloos & Mahala

Short.

Ida married 2nd Hendrick - I haven't been able to find them census wise and

was hoping you might have a name for the second husband. [1900, 1910, 1920]

Her daughter Hattie VanCise m1 Paynolds m2 Leonard Doty. I can not find any

Paynolds and was hoping that if I could find Ida I might be able to find Hattie.

Ida Cloos

b. Jul 6, 1863

d. Feb 8, 1941Barberton, Summit Co., OH

Ida was liviing with Hattie and Leonard in 1930. On that census her last

name was Hendrix.

Thank you,

Dianne
