Generation No. 2
2. SR. NEWBURY2 CLOOS
(REUBEN1) was born 17 Jun 1772 in Mohawk River, NY, and died 07 May 1853
in Deerfield Township, Tioga Co., PA. He married (1) ESTHER SHORT 1795
in NY State, daughter of JOHN SHORT and JEAN. She was born 24 Jun 1776
in RI or NY, and died 02 Oct 1829 in Knoxville, Tioga Co., PA. He
married (2) PATTY PERMELIA (RICE) REYNOLDS Abt. 1830. She was born 15
Apr 1771 in Wallingford, CT, and died 07 Aug 1853 in Deerfield Township,
Tioga County, PA.
Notes for SR. NEWBURY
CLOOS:
Newbury and wife,
Esther came to Cowansque Valley, NY from Connecticut in 1807 and settled
on a farm in Deerfield Township about three miles above Osceola.
Newbury had 11 children by Esther. Lived in CT about 1806-1807. (This
farm was owned by Wally Wood in 1999.)
As of August 1993,
the original family homestead/farm, east of Knoxville, Pa on Rt. 49, was
still occupied by descendants of the Cloos family, Wally and Esther
Doane (great, great granddaughter of Esther Cloos Daniels - 1916). It
is probable that all 11 children born to this family were probably born
at that home. Three of the sons changed the spelling of the name from
Cloos to Close. (Reuben, David and Ambrose). One story given for the
change of name was that when some of the family wanted to change from
being staunch Democrats to Republicans they also changed their name.
Jane Cloos (1852), the granddaughter of Newbury & Esther, was caught in
the middle and became a Prohibitionist according to one of her Great
Grandchildren.
In April 1999 Sally
Close Meabon & husband, Chuck, visited the farm, as well as the David
Close house just a few houses east of this farm. Mary Wood Wetmore and
her husband bought the David Close place (built in 1835 by David) and
Mary still lives there in 4/99. She is a sister to Wally Wood on the
Newbury Cloos Farm. Their great grandfather, Oliver Wood bought the
Newbury Cloos Farm in 1861 when he came to the area from NJ. So the
Cloos's owned it for 54 years. Mary Wood Wetmore writes that her
grandfather was 15 at the time that his father bought the farm from
Newbury Cloos. Some years later Joseph became owner. Then after his
death, Russell Wood bought it and when Russell died in 1959 his youngest
son, Waldo became the owner and has had it since.
Mary says the
original Cloos house was moved west of where the house now is, a new one
was built in 1886 on the orginal site of the older one. Then the older
one was moved across the road for tenants to occupy and later burned.
According to
records compiled by Ernest V. Close in 1925, Newbury Cloos, Sr. died
October 2, 1853 and his wife, Esther Short Cloos died May 7, 1829.
However, on the gravemarkers in Carpenter Cemetery, Knoxville, PA., his
death date is written as May 7 and hers as October 2, the years
remaining the same in both places.
Stephen Johnson, ggggg
grandson reports Reuben acquired land on January 1, 1808. World Family
Tree Vol 2, Pedigree #1381, 1790 Census Mohawk Twp, NY 2 sons and 3
daughters. Buried in Academy Corners, Tioga County, Pa at Old Lorne
Carpenter Farm at age 83.
Information found on
internet, //members.aol.com/TLSpears1/cloos.htm She says that he was
born in the Mohawk Valley, Montgomery County, NY.

Found Abel Close (1777-1778) listed on FTM Geneology Site Finder: Main,
on the internet.
The Deerfield Township
of 1883 states: At the time Buffalo was burned by the British in 1814
Newbury Cloos, John Knox, Charles Carpenter, Charles Costley, Elanson
Seelye and Eleazer Seelye volunteered to serve against the enemy, and
went to Big Tree to tender their services. John Howland conveyed the
party there home again. Their services were not needed.
The History of Tioga
County, PA 1897 states that Newbury joined the volunteer company that
was collected from the Tioga and Cowanesque Valleys in February of 1814
to prepare to protect the Tioga County from the Indian invasion during
the War of 1812. But as the British retired after their assault on
Buffalo, the company was sent home and disbanded.

Sally- Let me know
what you think of this ! Tom
> Dear Tom, Me again
! It is most likely that your Clark family in Deerfield Twp. near
Academy Corners is the one that my great grandfather, Lovell Short's
first wife was a part of. Sorry that I'm not sure of her first name; it
may have been Eleanor and they would have been married around 1820 or
so. She and all their children (according to Lovell's obituary) died in
an epidemic and are buried in Robert Hill Cemetery near Little Marsh,
Pa. Lovell then married, about 1828, my great grandmother Thankful
Hackett Short. Lovell's Short's uncle, John Short of Gloucester, R.I.
settled on the Cowanesque River in the same vicinity of Academy Corners
in 1807; his son Rev. David Short and his daughter Esther , wife of
Newbury Close. are buried in the old Carpenter Cemetery just below
Academy Corners. John Short's tract was on the north side of the river
and must have been just about where the Academy was later built since
his grandson Caleb who had inherited some of the land, gave land for a
community race track right there. The Clark's, it would seem, must have
been near neighbors. This isn't much help, but I thought it just might
add a little to your store of information. Melva C.

McGirr is Irish/Celtic in origin, probably originating in Scotland at an

want to consider the SHORT name, and perhaps they had immigrated to
Ireland from England, at some early date.

I live in Roseville,

daughter of Alva
Burton Temple, son of Edwin Temple, son of Russell Temple, son of Daniel
Temple. Daniel Temple was married to Hannah Close (Cloos?) b. 1774 Aunt
of Armon Close b.1802 son of Newbury Close. Russell Temple's daughter
Elizabeth was married to DeRuyter Avery. There is a Jane Owlett married
to Charles Close b. 1826 son of Reuben Cloos b. 1798. Jane Owlett is the
sister of Martha Owlett b. 1825. Martha Owlett married Edwin Temple.
Edwin Temple moved to Logan Twsp. Grand Forks Co. North Dakota. He and
Martha are buried in a country Cemetery there. I have seen their graves.
I have a book that has
all the Temple family tree in it. Decendants of Abraham Temple who
appeared in Salem, Ma. 1636. No connection back to England has ever been
found.
Slowly I have been
trying to gather information about Temple ancestors wives and just
recently started on Hannah Close. She is identified as Armon's Aunt in
the book.

P.S. The Burton in my

Owlett's father.
