Sally,      How come some people think Newbury Cloos was born in Scotland?  Also did Reuben Cloose ever live in Connecticut?

I have been researching one Michael Clark born 1777 son of Lamberton Clark of Middletown, Middlesex, CT.  There are Short's in the area.  I'll have to look for Cloos also.  I have the Microfilm at our local FHC here in Wyoming.  Heather

 Hi Sally,        I found:

Greenwich, Fairfield Co., CT, Vital Records from Barbour, 1668-1852 - A-H

Transcribed by Coralynn Brown

CLOSE, CLOES, CLOOS, CLOOSE

Reuben, son Benjamin, b Feb 9, 1717/18

There were a lot of Cloos names in this Greenwich Record.  Have you ever looked at this site  :  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/

If you are looking in Connecticut and they're adding daily to Massachusetts it is a great site.  It compares very well with the town record I am looking at.  Heather

You asked where I found the 1790 census info on Reuben Close.  It was on the Rootsweb site for Mohawk Town, Montgomery Co., NY.  I didn't find anything else on the Close family there.  It might be worth writing to ask if they have a deed for purchase of land by Reuben and if you do ask for a deed for Reuben Close or Cloos.      Helen

THIS COMES FROM PAT CLOSE  on 8/10/2001 email: Drprclose@aol.com

My daughter has been doing some genealogy research this summer.  She found out that Newbury's father was Reuben and a revolutionary war soldier.  He does not appear to have been born in Scotland and may have been one of the Palatine Germans who emigrated here during the mass exodus in the early 1700s.  Hope you have a great reunion.  Pat  ................Then Sally talked to Pat and he told her about the site for Palatines in Germany, etc. - lots of info and Sally found under: Fort Klock Historic Restoration a Cloes, Reuben under Tryon County Militia, 3rd Regiment, a Peter Cloes and a Peter Clos elsewhere.

Hi again Sally!  There is a pretty good probability that you are correct in assuming that your Cloos family escaped from the Palatines and settled in PA.  My wife has some branches that did just that - PA to MD, to WV, to IL.  These folks had VERY strong Church affiliations and the family's intermarried and stuck together whenever they moved.  Check the geographic areas history where you locate your line and look for other family's and the early local church history's.  If you find a connection, you can probably bet that the history of some other local family will pertain to your Cloos line also.  Also these folks who left the Palatinate very often had moved all over the place to escape religious persecution - ie from northern France, to Germany, to Switzerland, back to Germany, to the Colonies (USA).  Again, be liberal in the spelling of the names as you search - they were all "goofed-up" in Europe, but also in the USA up into the late 1800's and early 1900's.  Incidentally, the name Clos/Klos/etc. is a contraction of the name, Nikolaus, "Victor of the Nation".  Bishop Nikolaus of Myra in the 4th Century was very popular and this name became very common.  In common use Nikolaus became Klass, and then many variations: Klos in German, Clos in French.  I found old records in the old Alsace/Lorraine (now Moselle) region in France going back into the 1569-1799 period with all the various spellings - only made a few "guesstimate" connection however.  "Close" is English meaning the "enclosed courtyard" - a location: -- Baynard Close (the enclosed courtyard at the Baynard home).  And again, Happy Hunting!   Earl  Close

> Hi,Thank-you for your response. My connection to Reuben is thru Matilda Cloos. Her daughter Jane Faulkner is my gg grandmother, Flora my g grandmother, Delos Becraft my grandfather. Do you have any info on Reuben's wife, who is buried in the Carpenter Cemetery ? I have reason to believe that she was a Mohawk Indian, probably from near the Amsterdam area. Would be interested in any info about she and Reuben. Understand he was born in Scotland around 1742.Thanks,Paula

This comes from Paula Michener Hubert on 6/21/2002  My mother remembers her grandmother Flora Wass Becraft, daughter of Jane Faulkner Wass, daughter of Matilda Cloos, and she  says that Flora was Mohawk Indian.  I have tried to trace that connection and have ruled it out in the Wass and Faulkner end of the family.  The area in Montgomery County in that time period had many Mohawk Indians, so that is where I came up with the idea of Reuben's wife being the Indian.
