Report on 2009

Descendants   of  Newbury  Cloos  came  together  to  celebrate  the  109th Cloos-Close  Reunion on August 23, 2009, at Cownesque Lake Park, Tioga, PA. The  day dawned with overcast-cloudy skies which lingered through out the day.  The  family  was  blessed with no little drops of rain, which many of those  clouds  held.  Descendants  from across the country started arriving around 11:00am, Parke and Lorna Close and family being the first to arrive.

They all chipped in and helped with some finishing touches for the reunion, covering  table cloths and hanging decorations. This year’s theme was Mardi Gras!

To make the festive greeting to extended family was Charles Henry Lingle, who managed the registration table and door prize activities. To accompany this festive Mardi Gras greeting were give-outs of colorful bead necklaces and  decorative masks. As with the passed several years, the registration table is where family members could sign the old registry, obtain a stick-pin location tag, to stick in the United States map, showing from which they traveled. Along with purchasing $1 tickets for raffles for door prizes. These raffles included a 50/50 raffle and raffles for four different door prizes. Door prizes consisted of a cheese serving tray, glass vase, 25$ Applebee’s and 25$ gas card.

Some family members enjoyed juice, coffee and breakfast pasties, as they arrived. By around noon, approximately 65  were  assembled, mixing and mingling, making new  friendships. Lunch started with Dick Close giving grace,  around  1:00pm. With everyone bringing a dish to pass, there were a variety of wonderful salads, vegetables and meats, not to mention the desserts!! Grillers of the hamburgers, hotdogs and chicken were Scott Close and Richard ‘Dick’ Close. They cooked plenty for everyone. There was some scrambling for kids games, but items were quickly obtained and the games began. Games included ‘Egg Toss’, three-legged race, ‘Feed Sack’ race, There was also, guess the ‘Beads’ in the jar.

The business meeting was called to order by president Scott Close around 2:30pm, with the reading of the minutes  by Cheryl Quisenberry, and approved. A portion of the minutes from the 11th reunion held in 1909 was read, as well. A call of family updates was requested. Those that were and had been brought to the secretary’s attention were the birth of Saiorse, daughter of Jenelle and Shawn Kilborne (?) born May 7, 2009. The death of Mary Susan Urban Close wife of the last Vernon A. Close. The following new business  was discussed. A motion was made to hold next years meeting at same  place, all approved. Meeting date will the first Sunday after the third Thursday in August, being August 24,  2010. Sheila Rae Miller volunteered to lead the children games. Invitation for next year’s theme as made, motion  made of Pirates and Oceans Theme, all approved. Awards were then given away for various types. Youngest, Maggie Cleveland (4 years), the eldest female, Thelma Close (86), the eldest male, Parke Close (77), furthest  traveled was Peggy Haas, from Steamboat Springs, COLORADO!! (Note this  was her first time attending the reunion), shortest traveled was Madeline Smith from nearby Tioga, PA. Raffles were awarded as follows 50/50-Christopher Lingle, Cheese Tray-John Aragona (earlier that day he had mentioned that he  could use it), Glass Vase-Peggy Haas and ‘Guess the Beads’  game  –  Carol Close (Guessed 2397), the joke was that the vase was not included, sort of like batteries with toys. "So, please pour out the 2265 beads and return the vase,  thank you." Everyone laughed! The business meeting portion was closed, with the ‘White Elephant’ sale following. By  4:00pm many family members had departed to their various destinations across the country, adorned with beads and colorful Mardi Gras mask!.

What a GORGEOUS day it turned out to be! Thanks for all those others, which helped  on  the reunion’s planning and activities. And finally to all those members  that  attended, traveling in one instance 1,500 miles, thanks for making this a joyful and wonderful 109th Cloos-Close Reunion. Thank for attending the Cloos-Close Reunion Mardi Gras style!

Cheryl Quisenberry

PLEASE READ BEFORE PROCEEDING

This website you are about to enter contains years of research done by a few family members and researchers on the history and relationships of  the Cloos/Close, and Descendants of Newbury Cloos families. The data supplied here is for genealogical research purposes only. If anyone is offended by the data contained on this site, please remember that it was easy for us to find this information and therefore would be easy for any one else to discover.
A thought to what this site represents. We have supplied our men and women to fight and die for this country's freedom. We are trying to show how each of these families came about. Some from very humble beginnings. We have produced Educators, Doctors, Lawyers, Farmers, Mechanics, Engineers and who knows. As we collect more information you will see how as a group we have had a part in molding this country. Our women have worked hard to help their men, both on the land and in industry.
In a project of this size, perfection is certainly a goal and of course is ideal, but as you all know it is not achievable in this our realistic world. The alternative is to do nothing or to do very little. Screening out all but the proven facts (this is impossible). We do not have the resource's to collect, and administer all this resource and still confirm that everything is absolutely true. It represents the efforts of many people over a wide span of time each of whom has contributed his or her very best, and we are passing it on to you as best as we know how. Be warned, and use these resource's accordingly, with due caution. Many dedicated people have helped in making this information available for us to give to you. We give this as a gift. We accept your thanks and appreciation as that is our only payment. We thank you for not being to critical of our errors and omissions, some of which are ours, and some of which we carry on from our predecessors.
As we find and receive more photos and documents, we will enter them here. Hopefully our children will like what they see here and this site will remain for years to come. We are here on earth for such a short time and we need not be forgottenThank You!

 Lets enjoy this site.

  Hi!

We have tried to put together a few fun things, facts and some information about our family in which we hope most visitors will find something of interest. Some may even find these facts, or lack thereof, amusing and that's okay too because we try not to take ourselves too seriously.  We have attempted to create a place in which we can connect with our family members and old friends  where it might not otherwise be possible to do so.
Check out the photo albums the History Pages. Who knows, you might see yourself there! (Send us some new information that we can add to this site). Send us more pictures info, we would like to include pictures of your family, friends from the old neighborhoods, the services, and from some of your travels. Look in the guestbook, sign in our
new bulletin board " We need more Family members to sign in" (this can really be fun) leave your profile name, contact info., and any comments you might have here. Who knows you just might find an old friend or family member there yourself!

Please sign in our new guest book and fill in your profile completely
